Estonian Startup Awards 2019 - The Fastest, The Biggest, The Most Impactful

Estonian Startup Awards 2019 happened on January 22nd, 2020, at Fotografiska Tallinn. The event gathered 300+ Estonian startup founders and community activists to celebrate the wins of 2019 and take a moment to set focus for the future. Thank you all who participated. There’s a live video available at LIFT99’s Facebook page to tune in to the Awards Gala (even if you already know the results, Kristjan Maruste’s - CoModule’s CEO & co-founder - debute as an MC is something not to be missed).

Ragnar Sass, CEO and co-founder of LIFT99 leading in The Founder of the Year 2019 category at Estonian Startup Awards.

Why Startup Awards?

With close to 1000 startups in 2020, Estonian startup scene is buzzing louder than ever. The sector keeps on growing 30% YoY, being the fastest growing branch of Estonian economy. Already today, Estonian startups contribute 2.5% of Estonia’s GDP, with the entire IT sector that number rises to 10%. And it keeps on growing like mad. Year over year.

We’ve come a long way in the past 3 decades, and that deserves a celebration. But it also calls for a moment to realign and discuss what we really want to focus on as a community and what conversations still need to be had. That’s why the 9 categories presented at the Estonian Startup Awards are not random. They are put together based on the trends and challenges in the local startup scene.

Some of the categories are educational - like how to build revenue, how to survive bootstrap mode, what kind of investor does my startup really need, etc. The most important one of these is probably the discussion around revenue. Most of the startups nominated in the Revenue Hack category grew their revenue 5x last year, some even more.

For example, in 2019, Veriff’s revenue increased almost 7x (from €485k to €3M in 2019) which allowed their team grow 5x (from 64 to 307). Steady work towards figuring out revenue is absolutely fundamental for every startup and the success stories make great case studies for the rest.

Other categories are wider and more serious in nature. Like is our startup scene truly inclusive or what kind of stereotypes do we still go by? Do we have bias across startup sectors (fun fact: hardware startups have significantly more trouble raising funds than software startups)? And what kind of impact is the startup revolution having on humanity and our planet?

How Were the Winners Chosen?

In December 2019, a wide campaign within the Estonian startup community gave us 974 votes, naming a total of 154 local startups, organisations, initiatives and ecosystem activists. A reasearch phase followed, gathering information on the nominees*, reaching out to each and every startup nominated, and putting together the final shortlist.

The winners were chosen by a jury of 144 Estonian founders - startup experts who understand the best what it takes to build a startup and what kind of support they need. All this was to ensure that all levels of the Estonian startup community would be involved, while still offering exciting and relevant results, beyond a “popularity contest” of the most known or the most buzz-worthy names.

Our goal is to keep the conversation around the categories, nominees, and winners going throughout the year. Many of the Bootstrap Badgers, Big Bang product-launches, or even Impact Visionaries are not yet very well known publicly, yet their growth numbers suggest they really should be known! We expect valuable opportunities to emerge for these startups from the public spotlight of Estonian Startup Awards.

*Some of the data released for the voting process can not be shared publicly. Hence selected KPI’s and customer names, for example, have been removed from the following descriptions of the startups.
